Improving conservation decision-making in Bhutan with environmental DNA

In partnership with the Department of Forest and Park Services of Bhutan, WWF-Bhutan, WWF-US, College of Natural Resources, Royal University of Bhutan, and ETH & WSL, Switzerland, Bhutan is launching a first-ever nationwide eDNA survey to monitor biodiversity across the country in 2026. The project is funded by Bhutan Trust Fund for Environmental Conservation (BTFEC), Bhutan. This innovative project seeks to transform biodiversity monitoring in Bhutan through the implementation of eDNA technology. By covering the entire country and its diverse ecosystems, the initiative will not only benefit Bhutan's wildlife but also empower local scientists, researchers, and students with state-of-the-art conservation tools.Through the application of this advanced technology, we expect to create a detailed biodiversity baseline, enhance monitoring capabilities, and provide data-driven insights for informed conservation decision-making. Key outcomes will include a comprehensive species inventory, improved conservation strategies, strengthened local scientific capacity, and increased youth engagement in citizen science initiatives. This project positions Bhutan as a leader in innovative conservation practices, reinforcing its commitment to biodiversity preservation and sustainable development.
